Coroner's Report Books

Two leather-bound and embossed notebooks containing inquest reports handwritten by James Dillon, King's County Coroner. Format of inquest reports is largely identical beginning with a record of the inquest number, date, location of inquest and the name of the deceased. Then follows a list of the jurors present and witnesses called. The reports end with a verdict on the cause of death.

Labourers (Ireland) Acts Minute Book

Minutes of the proceedings of the Board of Guardians acting as the Rural Sanitary Authority, under the Labourers (Ireland) Acts, mainly recording decisions taken in respect of collecting rents from labourers' cottages; the sinking of wells; and the erection of new cottages. Includes copy correspondence from the Local Government Board, as well as details of tenders and contracts awarded for new cottages or repairs/improvements to existing cottages.

Minute Book (1922)

Contains reports outlining the transition of Tullamore Workhouse into a county home. Also contains reports from sub-committees representing the other poor law unions (Edenderry and Birr) concerning the winding up of operations in those workhouses and the transfer of functions to Tullamore.

Significant redeployment of personnel is recorded such as hospital staff from the newly closed County Infirmary, and compensation claims from employees whose posts were defunct such as Clerk of the Union were also dealt with by the committee. Records decisions in relation to medical personnel based at various dispensaries throughout the county, and proposals relating to the treatment of TB patients. Also contains reports of new tenders granted for the supply of goods to the county home and some letters of protest about contracts being awarded to new suppliers in ' a ringing of the changes in certain interests.' (see p55, letter to the committee re Contract for the Supply of Bread, 28 October 1921.'

Includes regular matron's reports from the county home and hospital with medical details of patients. Also includes a report by the Visiting Committee (James O'Connor, Teresa Wyer and Mary K. Dunne) on the state of the county home following Amalgamation (p16, 23 July 1922).

Contains details of 'boarded-out' children such as their names and ages, and the names and addresses of their foster parents.

Sanitary Officer's Report Book

Register of reports of sanitary officers in Sub-Officer's District of Edenderry No.1. Date recorded include the date of the report, the name of the sanitary officer and the name of the District; the name and address of the owner/occupier; the nature or cause of complaint; the sanitary officer's recommendation; the order of the sanitary board; a description of steps taken to remove cause of complaint and a description of the result of the order.

Reports cover public health disease controls on infectious diseases such as diptheria, scarletina and typhoid; sanitation of public water supply; sanitary state of school buildings; and other threats to public health.

Sanitary Sub-Officer's Diary

Sanitary Sub-Officer's diary recording sanitary work performed for Edenderry No.1 Rural District Council (until 1925) and subsequently the Offaly Board of Health and Public Assistance.

Each page contains pre-printed template for recording the following: number of orders or notices to abate nuisances, make connecting drains or perform other sanitary work; number of prosecutions for neglect of orders or notices; number of convictions for neglect of orders or notices; amount of fines imposed by orders of justices £; fines levied amounted to £; number of houses, yards and premises inspected; number of dwellings disinfected; disinfecting chamber used by persons; articles of clothing disinfected; clothing and bedding destroyed by order of the sanitary authority to the value of £.
