Letter from Benjamin Bloomfield concerning the Battle of New Ross

Letter from Benjamin Bloomfield, New Ross, Co. Wexford to his brother-in-law, Thomas Ryder Pepper, describing his experience with the Crown forces during the Battle of New Ross (5 June 1798). Copied from the original by Georgiana Trench, his daughter, who mistakenly attributes it to the Battle of Vinegar Hill. Also includes typescript transcript.

Within the letter Benjamin describes the battle, 'They appeared as insensible of danger as if there really had not been the least, they were so desperate as to march up in the face of my gun several times, tho' I was supported by strong detachments of Infantry.' He also discusses his sadness at being separated from his wife Harriet.

Henry was also the most involved of the Trench family in Offaly and Tipperary communities. As a result of this local affairs are covered in some of these letters.

In the letters Dora describes her travels across Sweden and Norway with Benjamin Bloomfield Trench. Dora expresses her astonishment that English people do not visit countries such as Norway and her joy at seeing natural phenomena such as the fjords.

File of photographs and negatives of New Zealand taken by Thora Trench during her time there. Included in this file is a photograph of the crowd awaiting a camp inspection from H.R.H The Prince of Wales during his visit to the Rotorua Jockey Club on the 28 April 1920. The file also contains a photograph of The Prince of Wales carrying out the inspection.
Also included in the file are photographs of the The New Zealand Expeditionary Force's ambulances and their female crews. The majority of the file is made up of negatives and photographs of the New Zealand countryside and of areas of natural beauty and interest such as Kaikoura, Lake Taupo and Ohinemutu a Māori village. There is also a photo of Rarotonga, the most populous island of the Cook Islands contained within the file. During this time Rarotonga was considered to be within the boundaries of New Zealand.
