War Pensions Committee Memoranda Book

War Pensions Committee ms Memoranda Book containing draft and copy letters from R. H. Moore Hon. Secretary of Banagher Local War Pensions Committee. Letters chiefly relate to recommendations for acceptance of pension applications and arrangements for the completion of medical reports on applicants.
Contains also requests by Moore for payment for his work carried out on the committee. Letter of 9th May 1918 records the securing of three rooms in Banagher Technical School for the accommodation of Belgian refugees.

Administration

Contains lists of Irish Guards noting their name, regiment number, rank and where interned, including a separate listing of those from Birr; letters from Selfridge's & Co., Oxford St, London to Lois, Countess of Rosse, in relation to the contents of nine parcel types assembled for sending to the Irish Guards Prisoners of War; correspondence from Mary Britton, Rosfaraghan, Ferbane and Col. Douglas Proby, in relation to subscriptions collected in her village on behalf of Private B. Anderson (Reg No 3220), who is interned in Limburg; and correspondence between Major de Vesci, Regimental Adjutant, Irish Guards to Lady Rosse, mainly in relation to the movement of Irish Guards prisoners between POW camps in Germany so that parcels can be sent to them. Also includes ephemeral material such as newspaper cuttings relating to the Irish Guards, a packet of jam jar covers, and a copy of an illuminated address presented to Queen Mary from the Women of Ireland in July 1911, and distributed by Lady Aberdeen, the head of war relief in Ireland.

Letter from Stephen Flannery of Flannery & Co., motor engineers of Nenagh and Roscrea to Theodora Trench: 'I have received the paper from the Red Cross, and have filled in same, and returned to them.' Also includes a New Zealand mechanical transport manual used to record mileage, routes and journey lengths; Red Cross clothes patterns including male assistant's coat or overalls, gentleman's nightshirt, nurses apron, dressing gown; driving permit; meal voucher card for journey from from Walton to Cloughjordan 14/7/18 - 19/8/18; certificate of enrolment in a voluntary aid detachment; and permit to wear the Red Cross uniform.

Garrycastle War Relief Committee

School copybook containing printed newspaper minutes of War Relief Committee of Garrycastle.
First committee meeting held on 9th November 1914. Committee comprised of Rev. Dr. Monaghan, Dean of Ardagh and Clonmacnoise, Miss Armstrong, Mrs. W. Perry, Mrs. Sherrard, Dr. Meagher, Dr. Dalton, Mr P. Egan, J. P. and R. H. Moore, N. T. Miss Armstrong appointed Treasurer, Dean Monaghan appointed Chairman and R. H. Moore appointed secretary.
Minutes of 23rd November note that money would be made available from the central fund for the purpose of helping the sub-committees to provide furniture bedding and 'otherwise supplementing local efforts for the maintenance of the Belgian refugees'.
Minutes of 7th December 1914 note that the Local Government Board has informed by letter that they are at present unable to send any refugees. They informed that 250,000 refugees were coming to England during the following two month and that 20,000 of them would be located in Ireland. Contains 4 pages of ms accounts of War Pension Committee 1914-1918 recording weekly payments of £2 for maintenance. Last entry notes that Belgian family of [Ceunincks] left Banagher on 14th February 1919.

Application from P. J. Molloy for his parents

Ms letter to Banagher Local Pensions Allotment Board from P. J. Molloy regarding the grant paid to his mother. Letter states that both his parents are ill and unable to survive on the present grant of 9s 2d. With annotation from Major Rogers endorsing the application.

Memorandae requests information as to how many refugees are in Banagher and details of monies being forwarded for the maintenance of the refugees.
