Sheldon Usher, son of Mister Usher and Elizabeth Neville, was born in the year 1811. His father died when he was very young, and his mother remarried to Sir Edward William Crosbie, 6th Baronet (1794-1860), in 1821. In September of 1824 he wrote his father requesting permission to join the Navy.
