Typewritten letter from P. O Dalaigh, County Librarian to the Secretary of Banagher Parish Council informing that it is not possible to open a branch at Banagher 'owing to the scarcity and high cost of books at the present'.

Files relating to the plans by Offaly County Council to commemorate the 1916 Rising at 50 years. Includes file containing records of attendance of delegates at the committee meetings (1966); minute book recording resolutions agreed by the County Committee of the 1916 Jubilee Commemorations with Mr Nicholas Egan presiding. The Tullamore Committee, with All O'Brennan as chair, organised the main celebration with a parade on Easter Monday and the commissioning of a commemorative film (1966-1967); large correspondence file concerning the plans for the commemorations and particularly with the commissioning of the film (1966-1967); a file containing the scripts for the film and a recent remastered DVD copy of the film, the original of which is now with the Irish Film Archives; and an accounts book recording subscriptions to the 1916 Commemoration Fund (1966-1967).

'Last evening Mrs Ennis was home to see her mother and she got from her a beautiful Land League flag in very good condition. The flag is of green with the slogan 'The Land for the People' on the back. On the front it had a picture of C.S. Parnell & of his home in Avondale. Super-imposed on Parnell's picture is a picture of Daniel O'Connell and presumably C. S. P. was 'effaced' after the Divorce. I have also learned that there is in Killeaveys of William St. a lovely picture of Dr Dunne...Both will be additions to our Museum.'

Issues covered by the various reports are concerned with the appointment and salaries of employees; the arrest and detention of members of the committee during the Civil War (see p5, 10 April 1923); building works at dispensaries and hospitals; compensation and pension claims arising from the winding-up of the poor law unions; matters arising with the TB hospital in Birr; commandeering of Dr Woods house at Kinnitty Dispensary by the military (p 43, 8 May 1923); tenders for the supply of provisions to the county home; details of patients at the hospital; proposal from Ministry of Local Government relating to the abolition of Hospital and Homes Committee and Substitution of the County Board of Health therefor under the Local Government (Temporary Provisions) Act, 1923 (p59, 17 May 1923); remaining furniture from Birr Union being taken to Birr Castle on its requisition by Free State Army (pp62-63, 17 May 1923); the condition of Birr workhouse following evacuation by Free State Army (p 64, 2 June 1923); financial issues arising from failure to return 'inmates' in county homes to their counties of origin on amalgamation in 1921; and a proposal by the Ministry of Local Government relating to the appointments of Home Assistance Officers.

Includes report by the Visiting Committee (James O'Connor, J. Scally and Teresa Wyer) on condition of county home (p71, 10 July 1923) and remarks on unfulfilled recommendations from the previous year's report. Also includes extracts from the report of Dr Florence Dillon, medical inspector with the Department of Local Government on the condition of the hospitals at Tullamore, Birr and Edenderry, recommending the closure of the latter (p76, 22 June 1923) .

Contains lists of boarded out children, their foster parents and details of their accommodation, general health and condition in a report of the inspector of boarded out children. (p.87, 10 July 1923)

Matters arising from the reports include financial orders relating to the appointment and salaries of officers in the hospitals and dispensaries throughout the county; building works and alterations to premises; tenders for the supply of provisions to the county home; issues relating to Birr TB hospital; details of medical cases and transfers to extern hospitals; details of the recipients of Home Help including boarded-out children; referrals of complaints against named doctors and midwives; the financial state of Offaly Board of Health which is owed £6,055 by Offaly County Council (p31, 11 December 1923); the removal of furniture from Birr Union buildings and damage to same by Free State soldiers (p40, Nov 1923); reports on every dispensary district in the county (p44, 15 Nov 1923); arrangement for the workhouse buildings in the county which are not required for poor law purposes; the proposed closure of Edenderry District Hospital (p59, 19 February 1924); and the administration of home assistance.

Includes a resolution passed to refuse to hold a meeting or transact any business as a protest to the failure of Offaly County Council to transfer £6,055 as owed to the Board. (p54, 15 January 1924).

Includes reports from the Inspector of Boarded-out Children, in respect of arrangements for various children throughout the county.

Annual report, account and rental for year ending June 1917, showing a reduced remittance due to a reduction in income. Describes the state of Ireland as 'in a most disturbed and dangerous condition'. Also notes that it was the most favourable season on record for Irish farmers but adds 'no class in the community has in the Great War, now raging, given less assistance to the Empire either in men or in money.'

Report for year ending June 1919 outlining a remittance of £10,250 to Lord Digby, the increased amount being ascribed to revenue derived from the woods, particularly mature Scotch pine from Clonad Wood to a firm of match-makers. Remarks that although Ireland ‘remains in a disturbed an unsatisfactory condition this immediate neighbourhood has been very free from agitation and outrage and from a continuance of high prices for all agricultural produce and abundant crops, the Irish farmer is enjoying an era of unprecedented prosperity.’

Annual report addressed to the 11th Baron Digby following the death of his predecessor. Goodbody reports that £7000 has been remitted and briefs the new Lord Digby on the state of Ireland during the War of Independence: 'Ireland continues in a disturbed and unsatisfactory condition. This neighbourhood has not escaped the general destruction of Constabulary barracks, the only three barracks on your estate having been maliciously and wantonly burnt and wrecked, those of Clonmore being wholly destroyed and of Geashill & Killeigh partially so. The police authorities having vacated them prior to their destruction have since surrendered same, with a consequent loss of future rental. Claims for compensation have been lodged for substantial amounts and are still pending.'
